Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
From 2001 The R/V STELLWAGEN has worked closely with the Marine Mammal Lab at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Over the years the R/V STELLWAGEN has supported over a dozen cruises where scientists have deployed the Dtag equipment to help better understand the behavior of whales with regard to ship strikes, entanglement issues and low frequency sonar. The work has been undertaken from the Bay of Fundy Canada to the Southeast United States and Bahamas. In addition to providing excellent ship and shore side support to these projects, Ocean Works Group has been actively involved as co-investigator to these projects helping with the funding process and research planning.
State of Maine
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the State of Maine funded a major effort to look at large whale interaction with ground fishing line over rocky bottom. This effort was to better understand animal behavior where floating line was used by the fishing industry. As co-investigators with the State Maine in 2007 and 2008 Ocean Works Group helped to lead a successful research program including handling, some of the media relations, pre-cruise planning and post cruise assessment.
Duke University
Ocean Works Group and Duke University have had an excellent relationship for the past several years. Ocean Works has provided on water support to Duke off Cape Hatteras, NC allowing them to conduct research into Pilot whale interaction with the offshore long line fishing industry. During the time offshore we deployed small boats to collect biopsies, deploy acoustic gear, Dtags and towed hydrophones. Ocean Works also works with Duke setting HARP acoustic systems in Onslow Bay, NC. From our Fernandina Beach location we run year round marine mammal surveys for Duke University and University of North Carolina Wilmington. Ocean Works also stages and deploys Scripps HARP acoustic systems and Cornell Pop-up buoys.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution – underwater vehicles
In the proto type days of testing for the REMUS 600 the R/V STELLWAGEN was fully utilized as a platform to launch and recover these vehicles as researchers worked out hardware and software issues. These vehicles are now some of the most widley used of their kind in the world. This spring Ocean Works is extremely excited to be part of Woods Hole’s new HROV sea trials. This large Hybrid ROVhas since gone to the bottom of the ocean!
Applied Signal Technology – underwater vehicles
For the past two years AST has used the R/V STELLWAGEN as a platform to test its ProSAS side scan sonar system on several AUV and towed vehicles. Because of this successful relationship AST and Ocean Works have teamed up with AST to offer the East Coast ProSAS surveyor for many commercial and security applications. JF White Company
When the dive operations of JF White Company needed a safe reliable platform, they contracted the R/V STELLWAGEN. With plenty of room for equipment and shore side support JF White divers were able to make repairs on the offshore power cable from the main land to Martha’s Vineyard.
